Slow and careful drying of wood

These slow drying conditions encourage a chemical reaction to proceed in the wood; this reaction will eventually, as the lumber dries, lead to discoloration. The discoloration itself may, in fact, not show up until much later in drying--that is, the final oxidation and discoloration may actually occur below 15% MC
